Change agriculture - an overview

The biggest water problem is the way Americans do agriculture. Giant corporations own giant farms, which are farmed with extensive use of irrigation water and chemicals, depleting soils, creating disease, destroying pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Soil Health

The USDA NRCS Soil Health initiative recognizes 4 basic principals; minimize tillage, keep soil covered, leave living roots in the ground year around, and increase crop diversity (both the bible and George Washington advocated a seven year rotation). Make Drain Tile Point Source

Agribusiness and industrial agriculture has been exempt from cleaning up the water that comes out of drain tile. This water often has nitrogen and phosphates. Drain tile needs to be permitted, followed and documented. If you have drain tile on your land and do not hold the water, you should NOT be eligible for irrigation permits.
