The Asian Carp Fiasco is a subject that we as a state are just not talking about. With the Lock and damn in Mpls being shut down by the Federal Gov., the state should have a legit plan. Sport Fishing is a major revenue artery to this state which should be the least import reason.Just waiting around is not an option. Though much of the discussion here discusses the Pipeline issues, there is also the Asian Carp which is just as Important. I believe there needs to be more preventative action in this then the recent plan by the UofM which came up with noise and water jets to ward off the species. This is another example of wasted money for all involved.
Northern Minnesota's precious lake country is at risk. As you know, in June of 2015, Canadian Pipeline giant, Enbridge gained approval of a Certificate of Need (CON) from our PUC for an oil pipeline (the Sandpiper - carrying fracked oil from the Bakken) through the Mississippi Headwaters and lake country. The drainage area for the Upper Mississippi River TMDLs done by the MPCA is among the largest in the United States. To the best of my knowledge, it is second only to that of the Chesapeake Bay. The federal government is spending tens, perhaps hundreds, of millions of dollars to address cleaning up the Chesapeake. Minnesota elected officials at all levels should seek similar federal funding for work on the Upper Mississippi ...more »
