Taxpayers have paid for baseline water quality studies in areas anticipated for mining in the future, but where no specific project has been proposed. Similar to PolyMet being required to pay for the Environmental Impact Statement, mining companies should be required to reimburse taxpayers for baseline water quality studies in area where a mining proposal is expected in the future.
We know that farmland drain tile funnels more water and pollutants into Minnesota's water bodies. Yet, no one is tracking - on a state-wide basis - the amount and location of drain tile projects. The Minnesota DNR must be adequately funded to determine the full extent of agricultural drain tiling in Minnesota.
The ever-expanding human population will continue to devour our natural resources, including water. Water supplies will continue to dwindle - and water quality will continue its long-term downward trend until we figure out how to effectively address human population growth. It's time for ALL true water advocates to bring this issue to the forefront - and defuse the population bomb!
Legislation must be enacted requiring lead ammunition and lead fishing tackle be replaced with non-toxic varieties.
